Cornerback Nnamdi Asomugha will become the top defensive free agent when the market opens. The Oakland Raiders can not put the franchise tag on Asomugha either since his contract is voided.
This 2010 season, Nnamdi Asomugha needed to play in a greater number of defensive plays this season than he did in 2009. Asomugha participated in 14 games whereas last season he was in 16, missing his "incentives" by two games.
There was also a second option in his contract where Asomugha could also improve by having a greater number of interceptions, fumbles or even sacks. However, most QBs in the NFL refused to throw Asomugha's way due to the fact that he is the best cover man in the NFL.
So what does this mean for Oakland? Sadly, it means that the secondary will suffer as Nnamdi Asomugha closed down his side of the field giving the defensive front the opportunity to hurry the QB. With Asomugha out of the secondary, there will be holes on both sides of the field, especially since CB Chris Johnson played average opposite the Pro Bowler.
Nnamdi Asomugha is the highest paid cornerback in the NFL, racking in $45.3 million over the course of three years. To obtain his services, another team would more than likely have to match or go higher to match what owner Al Davis is paying Asomugha.
For the Oakland Raiders and the fans it would mean losing one of the better players in the organization. Asomugha has been nothing but a professional for the Oakland Raiders.
