Curry, who was the No. 4 pick of the 2009 NFL draft, will be brought in to add depth to a banged up linebacking corps in Oakland. However, fans shouldn't expect him to play his way into a starting role.
In Seattle, Curry lost his starting job to a rookie and was all but cast aside. He had just 22 tackles through the season's first five games and has really done nothing to distinguish himself during his first three seasons.
While he is certainly a physical specimen at 6'2" and 255 pounds, Curry has never lived up to his enormous potential. He has shown a tendency to get lost in coverage, he has not been a sturdy tackler and he hasn't shown enough pass-rushing ability.
The big knock on the Wake Forest product is that he has shown almost no football IQ and has really struggled in diagnosing plays on the fly.
Expecting anything from Curry at this point would be a mistake by the Raiders. Yes, a change in scenery will likely do him good, but his lack of football instincts are very troubling. He just doesn't seem to have anything to offer beyond being imposing physically.
Oakland has long had a policy of acquiring former first-round busts and attempting to revive their careers. Curry is yet another example of that philosophy. However, in this case, betting on the 25-year-old to step in and win a starting job would be foolish.
Curry should be considered nothing more than special teams fodder and roster depth at this point in his career. Those are the roles he is most likely to fill with the Raiders.
