With Carolina Panthers quarterback Cam Newton the opponent this Sunday, the Raiders used Pryor to help the defense prepare for his ability to run the ball according to Vic Tafur of the San Francisco Chronicle. There is perhaps not better scout-team quarterback for mimicking Newton than Pryor.
That doesn’t mean Pryor will ever be as good as Newton as he isn’t nearly as good at throwing the ball as Newton. Pryor is however a dynamic runner that can give the defense a different look and it sounds like the Raiders are finally ready to stop wasting that ability and put him to use.
Offensive coordinator Greg Knapp said in his session with the media that Pryor could get work on third downs and in the red zone. I’d imagine any work on third down would be trying to get fewer than five yards as Palmer is a superior passer. The Raiders have struggled in the red zone, so adding a new look and dimension to the offense could benefit the struggling Raiders.
