Santana Moss in Silver and Black Would Instantly Improve the Oakland Raiders

Thanks to a voided contract, the Oakland Raiders are facing the possibility of losing one of their best players in Nnamdi Asomugha.

Thanks to a different voided contract, the Raiders have an opportunity to instantly improve a team that was on the verge of a playoff berth last season.

On Friday, Adam Schefter reported that Washington Redskins wide receiver Santana Moss would become an unrestricted free agent due to his contract being voided.

In an offseason where the Raiders, amongst other teams, are looking at a potential mass exodus of free agents, making smart signings is key to success in the 2011 season, and signing a player like Santana Moss would be one of the smartest moves the Raiders could make (besides bringing back most of the young players who made up the core of last season's team, that is).

The Raiders are in desperate need of depth at the wide receiver position. They received a big boost in wide receiver play from rookie Jacoby Ford last season, but it still was not enough. Ford has proven himself to be an explosive threat that other teams will need to account for. The problem is, other teams now know that Ford is an explosive threat and WILL account for him when they play the Raiders.

Additionally, though Ford had a very good rookie season, Louis Murphy did not build off his rookie season as much as fans in the Raider Nation would have liked to see, and Darrius Heyward-Bey still does not understand the concept of a wide receiver's primary responsibility being to CATCH the ball. This makes tight end Zach Miller, once again, the Oakland Raiders' primary receiving threat.

Adding a veteran like Santana Moss will not only give Jason Campbell another solid target that he can lean on, but he would also provide a valuable source of knowledge and veteran experience for the Raiders' young receiving corps.
