San Francisco 49ers vs. Oakland Raiders Preseason Football Live Analysis

The Bay Area Preseason classic takes place this evening, with the Raiders traveling across the bay to visit the San Francisco 49ers.

Both teams have a number of questions to address before the beginning of the season:

The 49ers are forced to answer the age-old question of "How bad does Alex Smith need to mess up before he gets replaced?" The Niners signed veteran Josh McCown over the past week to pair with rookie Colin Kapernick behind Smith on the depth chart.

The Raiders have battled numerous injuries to their receiving corps this preseason with Louis Murphy, Jacoby Ford and Chaz Schilens all sidelined.

Both teams have offensive line questions. The Niners have a talented yet underperforming offensive line group of players that were overwhelmed by the Saints' blitz at New Orleans last weekend. The Raiders have a lot of holes to fill on the O-Line with a few sidelined for the game.

The first quarter should provide a decent look at the projected starters for the season. Alex Smith needs to prove he can play in the NFL, while the Raiders QB Jason Campbell needs to find competent, consistent partners in the receiving game.

Both teams have a good running game, the Niners with Frank Gore and the Raiders with Michael Bush. Darren McFadden is currently sidelined with a fractured orbital bone.



 

These teams matched up for an underwhelming game in San Francisco last season which saw the 49ers defeat the Raiders 17-9.

Alex Smith really needs to have a decent outing. A poor showing like last week, 2-of-7 for 10 yards, won't do much to boost the confidence of coaches and fans alike. Smith is easily rattled, so look for the Raiders to bring the blitz early and often.

If Smith can weather the storm and connect on a few short routes, his confidence should rise and his game along with it.
