"I'm very concerned," Cable said. "It's been a tough road for him. We get through the foot thing now, and something else has kind of reared up on us. We'll take care of it and get him back as soon as we can."
Cable said he hopes Schilens will be back for the season opener Sept. 12 at Tennessee if he needs arthroscopic surgery.
Cable, who has been frustrated with the constant dropped passes in practice, said last week, "I still feel that there are too many on the ground. We fight that constantly. We're certainly improved in that area, but we've got to keep cleaning it up and cleaning it up."
With Schilens possibly out for a couple weeks, and with the continued problems plaguing Darrius Heyward-Bey and the slow progress of rookies Jacoby Ford, Yamon Figurs, Todd Watkins, and Nick Miller, it is obvious the Raiders are in need of a veteran presence in the locker room. Yes, in the game in Chicago, Louis Murphy had three catches for 53 yards, but he also missed a critical third-down pass that went right through his hands.
But who is out there that would be a help to the Raiders? They met with San Francisco 49ers castoff Brandon Jones before he signed with Seattle, but he has had injury problems himself, and the Raiders didn't need that. The list of healthy veteran available wide receivers is really slim.
