Considering that the Oakland Raiders only have two quarterbacks on the roster, one has to wonder if the Raiders should try to sign Garrard.
While Garrard hasn't been a superstar in the NFL, looking at his stats you can see he has had some very respectable seasons as a starting quarterback.
In fact, if you compare Garrard's stats for the past five seasons, they are as good or better than Jason Campbell's stats during the same period.
Last season Garrard had more total yards and touchdowns thrown than Campbell, and his QB rating was also higher. Garrard did throw more interceptions than Campbell last season, but it was the worst season of his career in that category.
I am not trying to make a case for making Garrard the starter in Oakland. Instead I think he would make an excellent backup. I would feel more confident having Garrard in the game than Kyle Boller. The Oakland offensive line has had trouble protecting the QB the past few seasons, so there is a good chance the backup QB will see action for the Raiders early in the season.
Having Garrard on the team would also help in the development of the currently suspended Terrelle Pryor. I have my doubts that Pryor will be ready to step in as the Raiders backup QB at any time this season. However if Pryor works hard, and has veteran QBs to learn from he may be an option later in the season.
I think having Garrard as another backup QB would be a good thing for the Raiders as a team, and in the development of Pryor.
