The 27-year-old Wimbley was coming off one of the best seasons of his career.
He recorded 58 tackles(46 solo), and became more of a force rushing the quarterback, recording nine sacks.
Wimbley's rookie contract was set to void because he met the minimum playing time standards included in the deal.
So, Wimbley would have become an unrestricted free agent this upcoming free agency. Thus, the Raiders used their franchise tag, which is currently valued at $10.2 million.
Wimbley came over from the Browns in a trade last offseason for a third-round pick. He was originally the Browns' first selection in the 2006 draft, going 13th overall.
In another transaction, the Raiders re-signed 27-year-old cornerback Stanford Routt.
With star corner Nnamdi Asomugha expected to leave in free agency, Routt will become the team's premier cornerback. Routt was payed close to $3 million last season.
The deal is worth $31.5 million over three years, with $20 million guaranteed.
This may seem like a lot, but Routt was challenged early and often with Asomugha on the other side, and played well.
Routt started 15 games last season, defending 13 passes with two interceptions. He recorded 55 tackles, forced a fumble and scored a touchdown.
Routt was the team's second-round pick (38th overall) in 2005.
