McClain Reinstated, Bartell Waived and Other AFC West News

The Oakland Raiders are a team in transition. The team and the fans hoped it would be a moderately successful transition year, as Reggie McKenzie brought in several veteran players until he could bring in young talent through the draft.

That transition has turned into a full-blown rebuild because of Oakland’s poor play this season. McKenzie started to part ways with veteran players like Aaron Curry at positions where he has young players who need the experience.

That transition will continue, as the Raiders announced on Monday that they will waive veteran cornerback Ron Bartell and fullback Owen Schmitt. Phillip Adams has played well in a limited role, and he would be the clear beneficiary of Bartell’s release, while the recently signed Jamize Olawale could see snaps with Schmitt’s release.

Adams would get three games to prove himself to McKenzie and Allen that he is starting material going forward. The Raiders elevated Chimdi Chekwa from the practice squad to back up Adams and Michael Huff and also reinstated linebacker Rolando McClain.

McClain being reinstated means that he will remain on the 53-man roster for the time being, but he will have to speak with head coach Dennis Allen about his role, according to a tweet by Jerry McDonald of the Contra Costa Times. McClain was suspended by the team for two games for conduct detrimental to the team, and the Raiders had to either clear a roster spot or waive Rolando McClain on Monday.

It’s a curious move to bring McClain back after his suspension, but after meeting with Allen, he could still be released. Until then, it remains unnecessary drama for a bad team with very little to gain from McClain remaining on the roster.

The fans have already turned mostly against McClain, and it is extremely rare to find a player turn things around and become a good player and team leader after a team suspension.
