Why? Why would any team want him, especially a team trying to rebuild its complete organizational structure?
According to Bill Williamson of ESPN.com, Jerry Rice said on NFL Live he thought Terrell Owens would make a great fit in Oakland:
Asked if he thought Owens would fit in with an NFL team, Rice said he thought the Raiders would be a fit because they could use a veteran to go along with their several young receivers.
Adding fuel to the possibility, of course, is Owens is friends and former teammates with Oakland quarterback Carson Palmer. Owens worked out with Palmer and some Oakland receivers this offseason.
However, Williamson does say he doesn't agree with the Jerry Rice on this one.
Williamson said in his story,
I won’t make it a habit to disagree with Jerry Rice about the wide receiver position. I think it makes good sense to defer to the greatest receiver of all-time on the subject.
Still, I don’t like the fit. Plus, Owens is 38 and he did not play in the NFL in 2011. Where’s the appeal here?
While I thought I had written on this subject at some point in the last two years, I couldn't find anything in my story archives; I must have just made comments on the subject on other stories where someone brought the subject up.
No, the Raiders don't need Owens and his drama, and let's face it, his career is pretty much over.
Oh, I don't doubt that some desperate team will sign him this year, but the Raiders don't need him.
They never have.
The Raiders have plenty of good young receivers; they don't need a drama-filled, over-the-hill trouble maker to disrupt everything
Luckily, I think new Raiders GM Reggie McKenzie is smart enough to realize that Terrell Owens would not help ...
