As many of the league's top teams have shown, the most effective way to build a team is through the draft. Well, the Raiders are already without a second-, third- and fourth-round pick in 2012, and the Curry deal just sent away a seventh-rounder in that draft, as well as a conditional mid-round pick in 2013. While Oakland has some nice pieces, it is not a team that can consistently compete with the big boys yet. Those draft picks would have helped add depth and solidify the team's roster.
Curry fell out of favor in Seattle because, despite his immense physical gifts, he lacked the instincts that make linebackers successful in the NFL. He couldn't diagnose run plays and was terrible in pass coverage.
Raiders middle linebacker Rolando McClain suffered an ankle injury on Sunday and it is not clear how long he will be out. Curry has always played on the outside, so it is unlikely that Oakland sees him as anything more than depth at this point.
Maybe the Raiders are hoping the Wake Forest product can learn the team's defense and provide depth this year while possibly moving into a starting role next season. Whatever the case, dealing two much-needed draft picks for one of the biggest busts in recent draft history just seems like a waste of resources.
Unless Curry completely changes course and develops into a solid starter, this trade will end up being a bust as well.
