NFL network analyst Jason LaCamfora and ESPN's Adam Schefter are reporting that the front offices of the Oakland Raiders and Washington Redskins have worked out a trade that will bring Redskins quarterback Jason Campbell to Oakland.
The deal will send Campbell to Oakland for "undisclosed future draft pick". The Raiders have also re-signed Campbell to a contract extension that will keep him in Oakland through at least 2011.
This trade has been speculated about constantly since Washington acquired Donovan McNabb from the Philadelphia Eagles earlier this month.
This makes a lot of sense for all parties involved.
Oakland needed an upgrade at quarterback, Washington needed to unload Campbell's starting quarterback salary, and Campbell wanted a chance to start.
All of these issues have been addressed.
Campbell will be the best quarterback on the roster the instant he steps on the field in Oakland. He's coming off of career highs in completions, yards, and touchdowns; he deserved a chance to start somewhere.
He may not be officially named the starter right away, because Raiders head coach Tom Cable is big on ambiguity and allowing guys to compete for playing time.
That said, if it is still an open competition, Campbell should have no trouble unseating JaMarcus Russell and moving ahead of newly acquired Kyle Boller.
This trade does beg a few questions, however.
What does this mean for injured Bruce Gradkowski? Will he still be a Raider when he is healthy again?
What happens to JaMarcus Russell in the future? Is Al Davis done with him? Will he be cut, or does he have some trade value?
What happens to Kyle Boller, Charlie Frye, and J.P. Losman? One, or more, of these players is bound to be out of a job.
