It all started with the hiring of Mike Brown in 2011. At the time, the Lakers had a pool of well-qualified coaches to choose from. The most prominent targets then were Brian Shaw, Rick Adelman, Jeff Van Gundy and Mike Dunleavy.
But Jim Buss decided to go with Mike Brown, a coach not known for his offensive execution, but who had two solid years as the coach of the Cleveland Cavaliers.
That coaching choice failed awfully quickly after a lackluster 2012 playoff run and an even worse start to the 2012-13 season.
Even prior to the Mike Brown experiment, Buss was also instrumental in ending the Lakers' relation with the well-respected Lamar Odom. After failing to trade Odom and Pau Gasol for Chris Paul, Odom voiced his frustration over the lack of respect he was shown by the front office.
In an even more bizarre move, he was then traded to the team that had eliminated the Lakers in the prior year, the Dallas Mavericks.
Fast forward to this past month. Buss and the Lakers eventually decided to let Mike Brown go, acknowledging the mistake they had made by hiring him. But Buss went on to make yet another questionable call.
He decided to hire an unproven head coach in Mike D'Antoni over an 11-time championship winner in Phil Jackson.
Given the fact that Jackson was more than willing to return, it should have been a no-brainer to hire him over any other coach in contention. But Buss chose a coach who lacked championship rings, a defensive system or even an NBA Finals appearance.
