New Lakers Uniforms: LA Unveils Hollywood Nights for 2013-14 Season

After Kobe Bryant's torn Achilles and the Dwightmare Part 2, the Los Angeles Lakers needed a change.

And now they've got one.

No, Mike D'Antoni isn't going anywhere (yet). But his players will look different when they return to action in October—and not just for the plethora of new faces in the locker room.

Via the team's official Twitter account, the Lakers will be donning new threads for select games during the 2013-14 season. The "Hollywood Nights" jerseys feature the franchise's famed purple and gold over a contrasting black backdrop:

According to the team's official release, via NBA.com, fans have been asking for black unis for years. With a not-so-subtle pat on their back, the Lakers feel that they have answered the call:

The Lakers have a long history and philosophy of listening to fans, and as a public trust are in the business of serving fan interest, from colors of uniforms up to the ultimate goal of winning championships. The purple and gold uniforms will forever be the staple for the Lakers, with the black ones adding what the Lakers hope to be a cool alternative.

The Hollywood Nights theme, the release continues, is meant to honor the star-studded fans that fill the Staples Center along with the behind-the-scenes workers that help keep one of the city's largest industries alive.

Fans will surely voice their opinions of these new threads, so let me be the first to say I'm a fan of the change. Kobe Bryant's death stare looks even more menacing hovering above the black jersey.

Pau Gasol seems to be excited by the look (the jersey, not the Kobe death stare) as well:
