While Blake still has two years left on his contract and will most likely have to stay in Los Angeles, he could see his role diminished if the Lakers bring in a better option. One guy Los Angeles should consider targeting is Jonny Flynn.
Flynn spent last season with Houston and Portland and played well in the limited minutes he saw. He averaged 4.5 points per game to go along with 3.3 assists per game in just 14.3 minutes per game.
In comparison, Steve Blake had the same assists numbers and averaged just 0.7 points per game more than Flynn, despite playing an extra nine minutes each game.
Clearly, Flynn is much more efficient than Blake is on the offensive end.
While he is a poor defender, the same can be said about Blake, and the Lakers have enough players who can make up for Flynn's lack of defense, like Kobe Bryant, Metta World Peace and Andrew Bynum.
Los Angeles still has yet to use its mini mid-level exception this offseason, and unless the Lakers use it on a wing player like Jodie Meeks, they should consider using it on Flynn.
The Lakers can not have a huge drop-off in play at point guard when Steve Nash needs a breather, so signing a better backup point guard is key to their success.
