It's hard to believe that Sessions will be able to do more throughout his career for the Lakers organization than Fisher did. Sessions doesn't care about that, and neither does Los Angeles. He just wants to win games.
"Derek Fisher was a great guy for this organization. I'm not here to replace Fisher," Sessions said. "I'm just here to do whatever they need me to do and try to win games."
He did just that in his debut with the Lake Show on Friday in a 97-92 win over the Minnesota Timberwolves, as he finished with seven points, four rebounds and five assists in 19 minutes of play.
The Lakers have severely missed the offensive explosiveness that Sessions brings for some time. L.A.'s offense has been a lost cause this season, but the arrival of Sessions will help greatly.
The seven-footer duo of Pau Gasol and Andrew Bynum is dangerous enough as it is, let alone when a speedy point guard is penetrating and finding them for easy baskets.
Fisher fit in great for Los Angeles because he was a great passer and facilitator. He understood his role in the offense, but was also a better shooter than he gave himself credit for and hasn't scored up to his potential in his career.
Sessions has that uncanny ability to find his teammates, but also can blow past defenders to the basket. That's been a missing link in the Lakers offense that is now a presence.
In his rookie season, Sessions' worst season in the points column (8.1), he had his highest total in assists (7.2). He's also never played with the talent that he'll have in Los Angeles.
