Kareem Abdul-Jabbar has officially boarded the "Good riddance, Dwight Howard" train, and he's packing some seriously unflattering heat for such an occasion.
Following Howard's announcement that he would be signing with the Houston Rockets, and not the Los Angeles Lakers, Kareem did what any Hall-of-Fame center would do—he took to his Facebook page to put not-so-Superman in his place (h/t Black Sports Online):
Dwight Howard is a perfect example of the fact that “potential has a shelf life.” Laker fans should be patient and allow Mitch & company to prepare themselves to do some serious work in the free agent market.
Yikes. Dwight's potential may have a shelf life or ceiling, but Kareem's subtle criticism knows no bounds.
Has Kareem also forgotten that Howard will be receiving plenty of Hall-of-Fame instruction from Hakeem Olajuwon and Kevin McHale in Houston? Perhaps these are indirect shots at them as well, or maybe he just thinks Dwight is incapable of learning, no matter who the teacher is.
To be fair to Kareem, he has every right to feel slighted by the free-throw shooting impaired Howard. It was less than a year ago that Howard was supposedly brought to tears when he met him, just before promising they'd be together for a long, long time.
If that's not considered betrayal, then what is?
Bear in mind that Kareem isn't the first former Laker tower to send unpleasantries Howard's way; Shaquille O'Neal himself joined the festivities as well.
"It was expected," Shaq told USA Today's Nate Ryan. "Not everyone can handle being under the bright lights. It was a safe move to go to a little town like Houston."
To recap, that's two seven-plus foot behemoths taking shots at Howard. That's quite an accomplishment on his part, angering two all-time greats in the same week. Well done.
