Stanley Cup Finals 2012: Los Angeles Kings Will Complete Sweep to Win at Home

The Los Angeles Kings are going to be in a hurry to make history, and they will treat their hometown crowd to a Stanley Cup trophy ceremony following Game 4.

The Kings will face the New Jersey Devils with a chance to close out the series on Wednesday at 8 p.m. ET in Los Angeles.

The Kings are in the midst of the most dominant run in NHL playoff history, but it is also the most improbable.

Los Angeles became the first team ever to start each one of its playoff series with a 3-0 lead. If the Kings defeat the Devils in Game 4, their postseason record will improve to 16-2, tying the mark set by the 1988 Edmonton Oilers, according to Jeff Z. Klein of The New York Times.

They are third among playoff teams in goals scored per game and first in goals allowed by more than a half-goal margin.

That Oilers team was a No. 2 seed going into the playoffs, whereas this Kings team limped out of the regular season, sneaking in as a No. 8 seed.

The Kings as a franchise have never won a Stanley Cup and only have one division title in their history. This is only their second finals appearance.

Hockey may have featured some surprising runs by low seeds, but nothing comes close to this. The lowest seed having the best postseason of any team in the sport’s modern history is truly remarkable. This is a run that transcends hockey. If the Kings complete the sweep, it will be one of the great sports moments in the last few decades.

This squad has that special something that is bigger than the team and even the sport. When the Kings entered the playoffs, they just clicked and became a cohesive unit, impossible to stop. The momentum they have built is unlikely to ever be equaled by another hockey team. It may not ever be met by another team in any sport.

The Kings are a team of destiny right now, and the Devils are powerless to stop their run. If Los Angeles plays as well...
