Regehr has to pass a medical examine before the trade can officially go through.
The move should come as no surprise to Sabres fans, as the club currently sits in 13th place in the Eastern Conference. The Sabres may look to move more players, including Jason Pominville, before the trade deadline.
As for the Kings, GM Dean Lombardi has successfully bolstered a blue line missing Willie Mitchell and Matt Greene, if only for this season. Regehr may very well be a rental player, as he is in the final year of a five-year $20.1 million contract that he originally signed with the Calgary Flames.
Regehr waived his no-movement clause in June of 2011 to join the Sabres and has done the same in this case in order to join the defending Stanley Cup champions.
The 32-year-old probably won’t be a big contributor on offense, but he will provide toughness, grit and effective defensive zone play. Regehr has two assists, 65 hits, 50 blocked shots and averages nearly 19 minutes in ice time per game.
The Kings’ top shot blocker (Rob Scuderi) has just 44 on the season and only two Kings defensemen have more hits than Regehr.
Regehr will be reunited with Darryl Sutter, who coached him for three seasons in Calgary before relinquishing the job to focus solely on his GM duties. With that in mind, look for Regehr to continue to play big minutes, including some time on the power play and penalty kill.
Regehr is looking to win his first Stanley Cup after coming up just short in 2004, when the Flames lost to the Tampa Bay Lightning in Game 7 of the Stanley Cup Final.
