Raiders vs Seahawks: What Positives Can Terrelle Pryor Take into Suspension?

Tonight, rookie quarterback and NFL Supplemental Draft pick Terrelle Pryor is set to take the field with his new team, the Oakland Raiders, in their Week 4 preseason game against the Seattle Seahawks.

This will be the first and only opportunity for the Raiders organization to see their new quarterback in on-field action until Week 6 of the regular season; Pryor is suspended for five games as a result of the controversy surrounding his NCAA violations and the manner in which he became eligible to enter the league.

While it doesn't seem like an advantageous position for a rookie quarterback to face, there are definite benefits for Pryor in having to sit for those five weeks.

One is his preparation; as the supplemental draft was pushed back first by the NFL lockout and then again while waiting for a ruling about his eligibility, Pryor has been able to practice for a mere eight days with the Raiders.

That is certainly not enough time for a rookie to learn a new system, let alone a rookie quarterback.

The pressure is off of Pryor, for now, to be immediately comfortable as a Raider and as a pro quarterback. The suspension buys him some time to learn the playbook and practice on his own, and at least get his mental game prepared for when he may have to take the field later this season.

And at the very least, he knows that the team has confidence in him, and did not take a chance just for chance's sake. By giving him playing time tonight, the Raiders are willing to evaluate his talent and give him a playing opportunity despite not having access to his services for five games.

Pryor has a future with the Raiders. They agreed to draft him while fully aware of his impending suspension, and it is very clear that they intend for Pryor to have a place in their long-term plans—these are good signs for the quarterback.
