So it makes it even harder to project an undrafted free agent who can become a star.
But so far in the 2012 preseason, Raiders wide receiver Rod Streater looks like he can be that guy.
Streater didn't garner much attention coming out of Temple University, and for good reason. The 24-year-old caught only 19 balls during his senior campaign with the Owls.
But something about him caught the eye of some Raiders scouts and they decided to give him a shot.
And how that decision has paid off.
On a team with some of the best young talent at the receiver position, Streater has emerged as an early favorite target to the Raider quarterbacks. In his first two preseason games, the 6-3, 200-pound wideout hauled in a team-high 13 passes for 109 yards.
These numbers haven't been for nothing. Streater has reportedly been receiving reps with the first team offense due to injuries to Jacoby Ford and Denarius Moore.
It is true that Ford, Moore and Darius Heyward-Bey are all in front of Streater on the depth chart right now, but their inexperience and inconsistent play could easily provide a crack for Streater to slip through.
With the situation in Oakland being what it is, it's going to be an uphill climb for Streater to become the next undrafted free agent star. But by now, he's got to be used to the climb. He's been doing it all his career.
