2012 NFL Offseason: Oakland Raiders to Work out Quarterback Jim Sorgi

Despite reports over the weekend that the Oakland Raiders were likely to sign free-agent quarterback Matt Leinart later this week, Oakland will conduct a workout with fellow signal-caller Jim Sorgi on Tuesday.

Sorgi, who is perhaps best known for being Peyton Manning's backup for multiple seasons in Indianapolis, spent 2011 out of the NFL. He last played in 2010 with the New York Giants, although a shoulder injury shelved him for the season and relegated Sorgi to the injured reserve list.

Originally a 2004 sixth-round pick of the Colts out of Wisconsin, Sorgi played for six seasons in Indianapolis, studying under Manning, although he never earned a chance to start or play meaningful snaps.

The 6'5" 31-year-old has played in 14 regular season games throughout his career, amassing 929 passing yards, six touchdowns and throwing just one interception.

Oakland, as it currently stands, has three quarterbacks on its roster, including starter Carson Palmer, second-year pro Terrelle Pryor and Rhett Bomar. It remains unclear if the franchise projects Pryor to be the starter of the future after investing a third-round supplemental draft choice in him last offseason.

What also is unknown is how, if at all, Sorgi's workout affects the team's plans for Leinart. It's unlikely that both would be brought aboard unless the team made a move to release one of its current quarterbacks, with Bomar as the most likely odd man out.
