It was clear from the beginning of the season, and highlighted in the playoffs, that Derek Fisher's age was catching up to him. The Lakers knew that heading into the draft, point guard was a pressing need that needed to be addressed and it was by picking Darius Morris.
Morris fills the point guard void for L.A. and by picking him they get a whole lot younger in their back court and a little more athletic.
He is a tall point guard at 6'5" and adds even more height to a Lakers team that is already one of the biggest in the NBA.
Josh Selby or Charles Jenkins could have been nice picks for the Lakers at 41, but Morris seems to be a better fit for the Lakers.
The Michigan standout isn't a great athlete like Selby, or as tough as Jenkins, but he possesses all of the intangibles: good court vision, great leadership skills and a solid work ethic.
According to many mock drafts, heading into today Morris was a first-round pick, so for Los Angeles to land him without moving up in the draft is a great accomplishment and one that will likely pay off in the future.
With the limited talent available in the draft this year, no one expected the Lakers to find a superstar talent in the second round. But, considering the circumstances, Darius Morris is the best pick the Lakers could have made.
