Stanley Cup Playoffs 2012: Jonathan Quick Makes Kings Favorites to Win Cup

The Los Angeles Kings are heading to the Stanley Cup Finals for the first time since 1993 and they can thank Jonathan Quick for that. Because of their stellar 26-year-old goalie, the Kings now look like the favorites to hoist the Cup.

The Kings entered the playoffs as the No. 8 seed in the Western Conference and managed to best the top-seeded Vancouver Canucks, 4-1. Then, they swept the second-seeded St. Louis Blues before knocking off the third-seeded Phoenix Coyotes, 4-1.

It has been a remarkable run that has included an 8-0 record on the road.

Quick was on his game Tuesday night as the Kings scored a 4-3 overtime win in Phoenix to clinch the Western Conference title.

While the entire roster has stepped up this postseason, Quick has been staggeringly good.

Following a regular season in which he set a Kings franchise record with 10 shutouts (most in the NHL) and posted a 1.95 goals-against average (second in the NHL), he has been even better in the playoffs.

In 14 postseason games, Quick has a 12-2 record, with two shutouts and a 1.54 goals against average. He has also saved an incredible 94.6 percent of the shots he has faced.

Quick and the Kings will certainly have their hands full against either the New York Rangers or New Jersey Devils, but no matter which team comes out of the Eastern Conference, Los Angeles will have the better guy in net. In a seven-game series, such an advantage is huge.

A native of Milford, Connecticut, Quick has already been named a finalist for the Vezina Trophy, awarded annually to the NHL's top goaltender. To this point of the playoffs, he also has to be considered the favorite to win the Conn Smythe Trophy (playoff MVP) as well.

He has certainly earned it, so far.
